After recording a lesson, easily add instructional text, annotations and more

In the Capture application's Edit panel, the captured Steps are listed on the left.

For each step the Stage shows:

  1. A screen capture of the step
  2. A hotspot added at the location where you clicked or interacted for that step

Below the Stage, each step also has:

  1. Step Text
  2. Details, Hint and Feedback Text

Steps List

The steps are shown as numbered thumbnails on the left side of the Edit Panel.

You can add an Introduction (Default as well as Testing) and a Summary for the lesson by selecting the respective button in the left-side menu. The Introduction is shown in a modal window over the lesson before the learner starts, and the Summary is shown when the lesson is completed.

Selecting a Specific Frame for a Step Image

Many software applications have transitions between steps such as fading from one screen to the next. To help with this, Capture records a series of frames for each step.

If you're a Mac user or a Windows user with the OpenH264 Video Codec installed, you can select the best frame by using the slider or by using the < and > controls to go through each frame individually.

If you are a Windows user and don't have the OpenH264 Video Codec installed, you will see three dots under each thumbnail and can select from the three images that were captured.

Re-ordering Steps

You can rearrange the order of the steps by dragging and dropping however once you move a step you can no longer choose a different frame.

Hotspots

Hotspots are added to each step at a default size at the location where you clicked during the capture process.

You can move the hotspot with your cursor as well as resize it in any direction by dragging at one of its edges or corners.

Step Text

You can edit the Step Text for each step just by clicking into the edit pane. Capture will provide basic text here based on the interaction for the step (click, double-click, etc.) what the tool or browser allows Capture to detect about the button such as its name, etc.

You can also format the text with bold, italics, underlining and bullet and numbered lists as well as add image and hyperlinks within the text.

Details, Hint and Feedback Text

The Details panel allows you to add extra information about the Step to be displayed to the learner in the Show Me and Guide View modes. In Show Me mode the Details text is only shown when a learner is on a step with Details text.

As part of the publishing process you can choose to display or not display the Details text. One use case for not showing the Details text is when using narration - the audio file could include the Details text but you may want to only show the Steps text to the learner.

The Hint Text tab allows you to add text to be shown to the learner when they use the Hint button in Try Me mode.

The Feedback Text tab allows you to add text to be shown to the learner as feedback when the lesson is used as a Question.

You can format these text fields with bold, italics, underlining and bullet and numbered lists as well as add image and hyperlinks within the text.

Top Menu Options

The top area of the edit panel has several additional features.

Undo/Redo

These buttons allow you to undo or redo the actions you take when editing. The only editing action not tied to undo/redo is adding narration audio to a step.

Save

This saves the editable Capture file to your local computer. You’ll be asked to provide a name for the Capture file.

Note: You can re-open saved Capture files by choosing File > Open or from the Browse option on the Start Panel.

New

This starts a new Capture recording.

Narration

The Narration feature lets you record narration for each step using your computer’s microphone or import an MP3 file.

When you select the Narration button, you’ll see two new windows open, a Preview window showing the current step and the small Recording Panel in front of that preview. You can move these around on your desktop.

Here's the Recording Panel:

The steps of your lesson are shown as numbers at the top of the Recording Panel (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in the image above). As you select each step, the second Preview window will change.

The panel also shows the Instruction Text as well as Details Text for the current step (if you’ve added Details Text).

The narration uses separate audio files for each step rather than one long, continuous file for the whole lesson. This makes it easy to replace the narration for an individual step, eliminating the need to re-record the audio for the entire lesson.

You can Record your own narration audio files or Upload an MP3 file for each step.

Recording your own narration:

  1. Select the Record button.
  2. Select the red circle to start recording. It will change to a red square to stop the recording. Once you've recorded audio for the step you can listen to it using the Play button. If you don't want to keep the narration file, use the X button to delete it.
  3. Use the numbers to move to a different step to record its narration file.
  4. When you are finished recording narration, close the Recording Panel window to return to the main editing panel.

Uploading MP3 files:

  1. Select the Upload button.
  2. Navigate to the folder where your audio narration files are located and upload the file for the current step.
  3. Once the file is uploaded the panel will show the file name as well as its length (time). You can use the Play button to listen to the file or use the X to delete it.
  4. When you are finished uploading narration files, close the Recording Panel window to return to the main editing panel.

MP3 File Settings

You can import MP3 files recorded/published at any setting.

Capture standardizes all imported narration files by re-encoding them as:

  • 128 kbps
  • Mono
  • Sample rate 44100
  • Constant bit rate (not variable)

Uploaded files with these settings will not be re-encoded.

Scene

The Steps in your lesson are grouped into Scenes. By default, your capture will group all steps into one Scene to start.

If you have more than one Scene, the Scene name will be shown in the instructions list in the Show Me and Try Me modes. In Guide View, the Scenes are shown as selectable links in a menu at the top.

Having multiple Scenes can be helpful for longer processes that you might other wise create separate as Capture files.

For example, in dominKnow | ONE you invite a Reviewer then assign the Reviewer to the Project. You could make two Capture lessons for this, or one lesson with two scenes.

In the top bar is the Scene menu:

On the Scene menu you can:

  • Record a new Scene
  • Remove a Scene (if you have more than one) and keep its Steps. The steps will be added into the Scene above.
  • Remove a Scene and all of its Steps
  • Add an additional Scene after the currently-selected Step. The added Scene will automatically contain all Steps that follow the insert location.
  • Add or Edit an Introduction for the Scene, to be shown in a modal window over the lesson. The Default Introduction is used in the Show Me and Guide mode uses of the lesson (but is not shown for the Try Me). The Testing Introduction is used when the lesson is added to a question page, if you need a specific introduction for that context. If there is no Testing Introduction, the Default Introduction will be used instead (if one has been set).
  • Add or Edit a Summary for the Scene, to be shown in a modal window over the lesson. The Summary is only used in the Show Me and Guide mode uses of the lesson, it is not shown in Try Me or if the lesson is used as a Question.

If you right-click on a Scene name (in the Steps list area) you can rename it as well as add an Introduction or Summary. If you have more than one Scene, when you right-click you will also see options for removing the scene with or without removing its steps.

Steps

Selecting Steps opens the Steps menu:

On the Steps menu you can:

  1. Insert a Step after the currently-selected Step
  2. Duplicate the image of the currently-selected Step to create a new step
  3. Insert a new step by taking a new screen capture image for the new step. This re-opens the capture mode so you can make a single screen capture.
  4. Delete the currently-selected step
  5. Edit the properties of the currently-selected Step

When you Edit the Step, the Edit Step panel opens:

On the Edit Step panel you can change the settings for the type of interaction that has been set.

In the upper right is a drop down list allowing you to change to a different type of interaction:

Image

Selecting Image opens the Image menu:

From here you can:

  • Take a new screen snapshot - This lets you take a new screen capture for the currently-selected Step. This feature remembers the dimensions of the original capture process.
  • Import an image - This lets you import an image to replace the screen capture for the currently-selected Step
  • Save Image as... - This lets you download the image for the current step. This is helpful for updates to the image - you can download it, update it in an image-editing tool then import the edited version back into the step.

Hotspot

Clicking the Hotspot button removes the Hotspot for the current Step. If you click it again, a new default Hotspot will be added in a default location on the image.

You can also remove the hotspot by selecting it on the image then right-clicking and choosing Delete.

Note: Hotspots are only shown in the Show Me (controllable as part of the publishing process) and Guide View modes. They aren't shown to the learner in Try Me or Test modes.

Draw

The Draw feature lets you add lines, arrows, circles boxes and images to any step's screen image:

You can add more than one Draw item.

You can Copy a Draw item by:

  • Selecting it then using the Copy, Cut and Paste options in the top menu (these become active), or
  • Selecting it and right-clicking. You will then see options to Cut, Copy and Copy To. The Copy To options allow you to copy it to all steps in the lesson, all the steps after the current step or select specific steps for it to be copied to, or
  • Selecting it and using the standard keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste

Note: Draw items are only shown in the Show Me (controllable as part of the publishing process) and Guide View modes. They aren't shown to the learner in Try Me or Test modes.

Censor

This allows you to blur out portions of the screen capture image for a Step for privacy protection or security.

Clicking the Censor button adds a boxed censor area to the screen image. You can adjust the size and location.

To remove a Censor area, select it and use your computer’s Delete key.

You can Copy a Censor area by:

  • Selecting it then using the Copy, Cut and Paste options in the top menu (these become active), or
  • Selecting it and right-clicking. You will then see options to Cut, Copy and Copy To. The Copy To options allow you to copy it to all steps in the lesson, all the steps after the current step or select specific steps for it to be copied to, or
  • Selecting it and using the standard keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste

Note: The censor feature actually changes the image so the blurred part cannot be seen if someone tries using a photo editing tool to try and recover it from the published lesson. (Other members of your authoring team in dominKnow | ONE will still be able to view the censored information if they download and open the Capture file to edit it.)

Marker

The Marker feature allows you to add an icon with a tool tip to the screen image.

Selecting the Marker button opens the Marker Editing panel:

You can set the background color for the icon, choose an icon or number, and set the icon’s color (dark or light).

In the Text panel, type the text you want the learner to see when the marker is selected.

When done, select the OK button to add the marker to the page. You can reposition it once added.

You can Copy a Marker by:

  • Selecting it then using the Copy, Cut and Paste options in the top menu (these become active), or
  • Selecting it and right-clicking. You will then see options to Cut, Copy and Copy To. The Copy To options allow you to copy it to all steps in the lesson, all the steps after the current step or select specific steps for it to be copied to, or
  • Selecting it and using the standard keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste

Note: Draw items are only shown in the Show Me (controllable as part of the publishing process) and Guide View modes. They aren't shown to the learner in Try Me mode.

Guide View

This feature allows you to set a cropped display of the screen image to be used in the Guide View mode as well as printed versions (including Share as a document option).

For the Show Me and Try Me modes you might want a full-display version of the software screen for realism. But in Guide View or printed content, very large screen captures can be hard to read or even see the highlight of what to interact with. So instead of a full screen you might set the Guide View cropping to just show a smaller area of the screen like a menu, for example.

You can Copy a Guide View area by selecting it and using the Copy, Cut and Paste options in the top menu (these become active) or by selecting it and right-clicking. You will then see options to Cut, Copy and Copy To. The Copy To options allow you to copy it to all steps in the lesson, all the steps after the current step or select specific steps for it to be copied to.
